GERMANTOWN FRIENDS SCHOOL ASSEMBLY PROGRAM PROMOTES DISCUSSION

More than 350 Germantown Friends School ninth through twelfth grade students, along with parents, teachers and administrators, attended a May assembly sponsored by A Chance to Heal. Dr. Jean Kilbourne, an expert on eating disorders and the impact of advertising on our choices, presented "Deadly Persuasion: The Advertising of Alcohol & Tobacco".

According to A Chance to Heal co-founder Ivy Silver, "Several weeks after the program, several parents reported that their children were tearing out magazine advertisements and wanting to discuss the influences affecting their decisions." Another outcome of the program was a request by students for a media literacy program at the school. "This is exactly the kind of impact we hope to have as we seek to fulfill our mission to educate the public on the influences that promote eating disorders," said Ivy Silver.
